Matthias Isler · Fractional CTO

Matthias Isler

Fractional CTO. Serial entrepreneur. Software engineer.

I’ve built companies, led engineering and spent 20+ years building software, including 12 years in CTO roles. I work with founders to make technical decisions and carry them through.

Let’s talk about your business.

A founder before a fractional CTO

I launched my first venture at 15, coding CMS systems for local communities. Some wins, some losses, but enough scars to call myself a lifelong entrepreneur.

Since then, I’ve validated 20+ prototypes in the market, built and scaled four ventures as founder and CTO, and completed one exit.

I co-founded GetYourLawyer in 2017: a Swiss legal marketplace, virtual legal department for SMEs and software for law firms. I formed and led engineering and owned the technology through growth, acquisition in 2019 and a management buyout in 2023, including technical due diligence. My final exit was January 2025.

At AureaTauri, I personally built the machine-learning investment engine and its complete technical operation. The venture was eventually discontinued following changes in regulation and market accessibility.

I know what it means to make decisions with your own business at stake. I bring that judgement into yours.

Engineering02

Engineering depth, leadership responsibility

Matthias Isler concentrating on engineering work at a laptop

I’ve designed and operated quantitative-trading systems, led Staffcloud’s live-platform rewrite and architected an appointment-booking platform used by BMW dealers. Recent work includes leading research, architecture and delivery of a production-ready AI workspace, connecting hundreds of external sources and supporting complex business questions across hundreds of gigabytes of company data.

I have personally hired more than 70 engineers and managed seven-figure technology budgets. Understanding the code and the organisation changes the decisions I make about feasibility, people, cost and delivery.

Leadership03

Clear, direct and open to a good argument

My style is honest, direct and persistent. If a plan is unrealistic, an investment is difficult to justify or the evidence points towards stopping, that belongs in the conversation.

Good arguments are welcome. People should understand what we decided, why it matters and what they own.

“He is a highly adaptable, encouraging, supportive, and friendly leader.”
Umut Ataman — QA LeadFormer direct report.

Often my role is less about adding more, and more about removing what doesn’t serve the business. Technology is a tool to build sustainable ventures.

Fractional04

Why I work fractionally

I enjoy working with founders at different stages and applying lessons from my own ventures. It keeps me curious and gives the business experienced technical leadership at the stage it needs it.

I have also mentored through MassChallenge and Startupbootcamp and contributed open-source software.

Switzerland05

Switzerland is home; the work is international

I work fluently in English, German and Swiss German, and have led multicultural teams across the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia. Work is mainly remote, with on-site involvement when it adds value.

Tell me what you’re building

Tell me which decision or blockage you’re facing, what is at stake and when it needs attention. I’ll give you my view. Then we decide whether to work together.

The first conversation is free and takes 30 minutes. You leave with my view on whether I can help and how.
