Matthias Isler · Fractional CTO

Decisions, delivery and the work behind them

Selected decisions, products and teams I’ve taken responsibility for.

I’m a serial entrepreneur who has built and scaled four ventures, completed one exit, and spent 20+ years in software, including 12 in CTO roles.

Client work · Internal product build

Choose the delivery model before committing the investment

A client was considering agency proposals for a product build. Those proposals priced a full delivery organisation: management, engineering, QA, design, discovery, sales, margins and provision for uncertainty.

I chose the internal route with the same delivery scope. By carrying technical direction and delivery leadership myself, I could organise the build around one engineer rather than an agency’s full delivery structure.

SaaS turnaround02

Client work · SaaS turnaround

Recover engineering capacity and protect customers

The CEO was managing engineering directly while defects and rework consumed capacity and customers left because of the platform. The priority was engineering capability that could turn product commitments into dependable releases.

I changed the staffing mix, replacing junior and mid-level roles with exceptional senior engineers. That meant letting people go and rebuilding the team. I took responsibility off the CEO and led changes across product management, engineering, QA and DevOps, so the stronger team could carry decisions through to delivery.

Trading03

Founder venture · AureaTauri

Build the path from market data to live execution

I owned concept, architecture, implementation and operations: a terabyte-scale warehouse, automated feature engineering, backtesting, deep-learning and ensemble models, deployment and millisecond-level ingestion and inference.

The venture was discontinued following changes in regulation and market accessibility.

AI workspace04

Client work · Production-ready AI workspace

Give an AI workspace the operating context of a business

A US AI startup needed answers connecting customers, people, projects and operations. I owned research and platform architecture and led implementation. The architecture had to preserve the relationships across that information so the product could answer business questions in context.

Agency production05

Client work · Software development agency

Change the production model before adding capacity

Customers were frustrated, developer turnover was high and outsourcing was becoming harder to control. I owned the strategy and execution of a new production model, replacing outsourced work with an internal engineering team. We connected ownership to contribution and used AI to automate repeatable work.

Fundraising06

Client work · Fundraising business serving nonprofits

Repair the economics of a knowledge-intensive service

Fragmented information and individual funding requirements made every submission expensive. I designed the knowledge architecture and workflow, separating reusable client knowledge from opportunity-specific requirements. I led implementation through a development partner, connecting automated research, knowledge graphs and human judgement.

CTO appointment07

Client work · Technical leadership appointment

Establish whether a CTO can lead this venture

After a failed CTO hire, I built an assessment around the company’s actual constraints. Candidates had to connect commercial priorities, architecture decisions and leadership reasoning, with structured feedback from several people. The company appointed a CTO who now successfully leads the technical side.
